Hafnium-based alloys form a hard, smooth, adherent oxide surface – a protective film that is vital in its resistance to corrosion. Hafnium is a heavy, steel-gray reactive metal that is very closely related to zirconium.
The density of hafnium is 13.31 g/cm³. It is a high-strength and hard metal that is ductile and corrosion-resistant with a high thermal neutron-capture cross-section allowing it to absorb neutrons.
